Why Sea Otters Hold Hands: the Real Reason Behind the Raft

Sea otters (Enhydra lutris) hold paws, most famously a mother and her pup, so the current doesn't pull them apart while they float and sleep at the surface. The photo shows up every few months, a pair of sea otters floating on their backs, paws linked, as if napping on a park bench. It isn't staged and it isn't rare. It's a small piece of a much bigger survival strategy for an animal that sleeps, eats, grooms and raises its young almost entirely on the open water, with nothing to hold onto but each other, and the kelp.

The raft, and why otters need an anchor at all

Sea otters spend nearly their whole lives at sea, usually within a kilometre or so of shore, and they rest in groups called rafts that can range from a handful of animals to, in food-rich areas, several hundred. Rafts are typically single-sex: females with pups in one group, males in another. Floating together offers extra eyes for predators and a warmer, calmer patch of water, but it creates an obvious problem. Wind and current don't stop just because an otter wants to sleep.

Without something to hold onto, a sleeping raft would scatter within minutes, each otter drifting off on its own current line. Sea otters solve this with two overlapping habits: wrapping themselves in kelp, and, especially between a mother and her pup, holding paws.

Why the kelp wrap comes first

Giant kelp and bull kelp grow anchored to the seafloor and reach the surface in long, buoyant fronds, effectively a rooted mooring line already sitting in the water. An otter that wraps one or two fronds around its body before dozing off stays tied to that one spot regardless of what the current is doing. Whole rafts will settle into the same kelp bed for this reason, each animal anchored independently a few feet from its neighbours.

Hand-holding does a similar job but without the plant. It shows up most reliably between a mother and a pup too young to dive competently or wrap itself in kelp: she tucks the pup against her chest, sometimes literally clasping a paw, so the two stay in contact through a nap or a grooming session. Any two otters resting close together may link paws for a moment, but it's this maternal pairing that produces the viral photos, not a general habit of adults holding hands across the whole raft.

A pup that cannot sink

Hand-holding matters most in the first weeks of a pup's life, and the reason ties back to that same fur. A newborn pup's coat is so densely packed with air that the pup is essentially unsinkable, it bobs on the surface like a cork even if it tries to dive, and cannot swim properly for several weeks. A mother otter spends that stretch carrying the pup on her chest while she grooms it, rests, and even forages nearby, and clasping a paw is one of the simplest ways to keep a buoyant, drifting pup from bobbing off on its own current while she isn't holding it directly. Some otters, adults included, are also regularly seen resting with a paw or both paws pressed over their closed eyes, a simple way to block the glare off open water while they doze at the surface.

Sleeping without land, without blubber

Most marine mammals that sleep at the surface, seals and whales among them, do it wrapped in a thick layer of blubber. Sea otters have none. They are the smallest marine mammal and the largest member of the weasel family, Mustelidae, and they stay warm in cold Pacific water purely through fur: two layers, a fine, dense underfur and longer waterproof guard hairs, trapping a layer of insulating air against the skin. The underfur alone can carry roughly a million hairs per square inch, the densest coat of any mammal on Earth. That system only works if the fur stays clean and fluffed, which is why otters spend hours a day grooming, and why a fouled coat is a genuine emergency rather than a cosmetic problem.

The rock, the pouch, and one of the few tool-using mammals

Sea otters are also one of the small number of mammals known to use tools regularly in the wild. Floating on its back, an otter will rest a rock on its chest and smash a clam, mussel, crab or sea urchin against it until the shell gives way. Many otters keep a favourite rock for repeated use, stashed between dives in a loose pouch of skin under each forelimb that also holds spare prey, the same pouch that frees up its paws to hold a pup, or another otter, at the surface.

That appetite for hard-shelled prey has a knock-on effect far beyond any one otter. Sea urchins graze kelp holdfasts, and left unchecked they can strip a kelp forest to bare rock. By keeping urchin numbers down, sea otters function as a keystone species: remove them from a stretch of coast and the kelp forest, with everything that shelters in it, tends to follow the urchins into decline. Add them back, and the kelp returns. It's one of the clearest predator-to-habitat chains documented in marine ecology.

Where to actually see one

The sea otter's range runs down the North Pacific rim: the Kuril Islands and Kamchatka in Russia, across the Aleutian chain and the Alaskan coast, down through British Columbia and Washington, to a separate population centred on California's central coast. Rafts favour sheltered water close to kelp beds, river mouths and harbours, so a slow scan of calm water near a Pacific kelp forest, binoculars ready for a paw-linked pair rocking gently on the swell, is the most reliable way to find one. The species was hunted hard for its fur through the 18th and 19th centuries maritime trade, which is why its range today is a patchwork of the coastline it once covered continuously.
