Alligator vs crocodile: how to actually tell them apart

The short answer

The fastest field mark is the snout: an alligator's is broad and rounded like a U, a crocodile's is narrower and pointed like a V. Close the mouth and check the teeth too: a crocodile's lower fourth tooth stays visible outside the lip, an alligator's disappears. Alligators stick to fresh water; crocodiles tolerate salt water. Both the American alligator and American crocodile sit at Epic rarity in the Kaught catalog.

Two large reptiles, the same general shape, the same waterline ambush habit, and a nickname problem that has confused people for centuries. "Alligator" comes from the Spanish el lagarto, "the lizard", and early European settlers in the Americas used it and "crocodile" almost interchangeably. They are not the same animal, and once you know four field marks, they are not hard to separate either.

The American alligator is a freshwater specialist, found in the swamps, marshes, rivers and lakes of the southeastern United States, from Texas and Oklahoma east through Louisiana, Florida and the Carolinas. Adult males reach up to 4.6 m and 450 kg. Its colour runs dark, almost blackish-grey to olive-black, which helps it disappear against tannin-stained swamp water. In cold snaps it can "ice", pushing its nostrils above a freezing surface and going into torpor beneath the ice until the thaw.

The American crocodile is a saltwater-tolerant species, living in mangroves, estuaries, lagoons and river mouths from southern Florida through Central America, the Caribbean and into northern South America. Adult males reach up to 4.5 m and 400 kg, close to the alligator's size, but its colour is lighter, a grey-green to tan, and its build is leaner. Despite its size it is typically far less aggressive toward people than its Nile and saltwater crocodile relatives, more likely to slip off a mudbank into the water than hold its ground.

The snout: the fastest field mark

From any distance, the snout shape settles most sightings on its own. An alligator's snout is broad, rounded at the tip and shaped like a wide U, built to crush turtles and hard-shelled prey. A crocodile's snout is narrower, tapers more, and comes to a shape closer to a V, an all-purpose design suited to a broader diet of fish, birds and mammals. Side by side the difference is obvious; alone, it takes a moment of comparison against the animal's own head width.

The teeth: check with the mouth closed

This is the most reliable close-range mark, and the one wildlife guides lean on hardest. An alligator's upper jaw is wider than its lower jaw, so when the mouth closes, the lower teeth tuck into sockets on the inside of the upper jaw and vanish from view, an alligator with its mouth shut shows an almost toothless smile from the side. A crocodile's upper and lower jaws are close to the same width, so the long fourth tooth on each side of the lower jaw sits in a notch on the outside of the upper jaw and stays visible even with the mouth fully closed, the classic "toothy grin" people associate with crocodiles.

Colour and build

Colour is a supporting clue, not a decisive one, since both species vary with age, algae and water tannins. As a rule, alligators run darker: near-black to dark olive-grey on the back, with a paler, cream-coloured belly. Crocodiles run lighter: olive-green, grey-green or tan, often looking almost khaki in bright sun. Build differs too. The American alligator is stockier through the body and has a noticeably wider, flatter head; the American crocodile is leaner, longer-limbed and narrower through the skull, a shape suited to slipping through mangrove channels rather than crushing armoured prey.

Fresh water vs salt water

Habitat is the difference with the clearest biology behind it. Alligators lack functional salt-excreting glands, so an alligator that spends more than a short spell in salt water starts to dehydrate; they are built for freshwater swamps, rivers, lakes and ponds. The American crocodile, like other true crocodiles, has working lingual salt glands on the tongue that actively pump out excess salt, letting it live indefinitely in coastal saltwater, mangroves, estuaries and brackish lagoons. That single adaptation, shared with species like the Nile crocodile, is a big part of why true crocodiles have spread to coastlines on nearly every tropical continent while alligators have not.

One family, two branches: the taxonomy behind the split

Alligators and crocodiles both belong to the order Crocodilia, but they diverged into separate families roughly 85 million years ago. The American alligator sits in Alligatoridae, a small family that includes only one other living alligator species, the Chinese alligator, plus the various caimans of Central and South America. The American crocodile sits in Crocodylidae, the true crocodiles, a much larger and more widespread family of around fifteen species found across Africa, Asia, Australia and the Americas, including relatives like the Nile crocodile, the mugger crocodile of South Asia, and Africa's saltwater and Nile crocodiles, both record-holders for jaw force. Alligators, in short, are the rare, geographically narrow branch of the family tree; true crocodiles are the branch that colonised the world.

The one place both actually overlap

There is exactly one place on the planet where you can legitimately see both species living wild, side by side: the brackish coastal fringe of South Florida, especially in and around Everglades National Park. Move inland into the freshwater sawgrass marsh and you are looking at an alligator's territory. Stay on the salty coastal edge, in mangrove channels and tidal creeks, and you are far more likely looking at a crocodile. It is a rare case of two similar-looking apex predators sharing a landscape by dividing it along a salinity line rather than competing head-on, not unlike how a lizard such as the water monitor and a crocodilian can share the same river system in Asia by hunting differently within it.

How rare is each one to actually spot?

The alligator's wider US range makes an encounter marginally more likely overall; the crocodile's narrower, coastal, largely nocturnal habits in Florida make it the harder of the two to actually catch on camera.
